Portland noise ordinance defeated!

Thanks to the hard work of active UBC members, an amendment to the City of Portland noise ordinance which would have severely and negatively impacted pile driving within city limits, was defeated last night. Complaints from residents in Portland’s Pearl District prompted a city task force to explore option to limit hours, or even over all use of Pile Driving equipment. The impact of modifying the city code would have delayed buildings, cost UBC work hours, and put a financial burden on our signatory contractors.

Last night UBC members; mostly from Piledrivers Local 196, packed the hearing and testified on behalf of squashing any additional restrictions on driving pile within the City of Portland. They were successful, and as of now the amendment is shelved. Thank you to all of the UBC members that have been showing up and working hard over the last year to make sure UBC Pile Driver work can continue!

Welcome to the 15 new UBC wood framers!

The PNWRCC Delegates were treated to a short talk on the wood framing industry. Durning the presentation 15 new UBC members were introduced and met with a standing ovation from the delegation. These wood framers spent the morning discussing the industry in which they came from, which was ripe with low pay, payroll fraud, and working conditions that were less than desirable. This morning was further proof that the NW Carpenters Union was true to its mission to stand up for all working carpenters, and to protect our craft. We welcome the 15 new wood framers to our Union, and look forward to working with you to further improve the wood framing industry.

Your bargaining committee for Western and Central WA counted the returned ballots today. There were 2213 Total ballots returned out of the 9065 that were mailed out for a 24.4% return rate.

The Contract proposal was ratified with a 81 % Yes vote.

The Total Vote was: 1797 to Accept and 412 to Reject the offer.

The breakdown by area was as follows:

Western WA: 1709 Accept 407 Reject – 81%

Central WA: 88 Accept 5 Reject – 95%
