Help OHSU create jobs!

Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) is asking for help to obtain a $200 million capital construction bond. They need people like UBC members in Oregon to urge their legislators to vote YES in funding this bond. If this bond goes through, OHSU is receiving private grants and donations, and in total will be expanding their campus with a $1.2 billion construction project. OHSU uses UBC members in its construction, and estimates approximately 3,600 construction jobs will be created.

MEMBER EMAIL TO LEGISLATORS DRAFT

Dear Legislator:

I am writing today to urge you to VOTE YES on OHSU’s request for $200 million in capital construction bonds for the Knight Cancer Institute expansion. The state’s $200 million investment in two new facilities would be matched by $1 billion in private investment to fund transformational cancer research.

Together, this $1.2 billion public-private investment will bring an immediate injection of economic activity to our state. When construction begins on two new facilities at OHSU, more than 3,600 construction workers will be put to work.

This project is exactly the kind of public investment that the state should be making. It creates thousands of good jobs immediately with hundreds of permanent jobs to count on when the facilities are operational. They are family wage jobs that give Oregonians an income to support their families and contribute to our communities.

As Oregon slowly crawls out of the recession that hit the construction industry hard, we believe Oregon must jump on this unprecedented opportunity to not only create thousands of good-paying jobs, but also become a hub of life-saving cancer research. A thriving new sector of Oregon’s economy will beget even more economic activity, benefiting us all in the long run.

Please don’t delay. This is Oregon’s next big opportunity to leverage $1 billion in private investment to build on Oregon’s pioneering spirit, improving the health and well-being of Oregonians across the state while creating thousands of new living-wage jobs.

Please vote YES on OHSU’s capital construction request.

Carpenters in high demand according to study

According to a recent survey conducted by the AGC, the trades are currently facing a shortfall of skilled crafts people. This is a good problem to have, and was an expected problem. With many Baby-Boomers taking advantage of retirement in the next 3-7 years, the hold left are going to be huge. As Union Carpenters we will all do what we need to do to ensure future needs are met.
